Don’t dull every knife in the house, every museum needs a self-healing mat. A self-healing mat is the soft supple surface every knife edge dreams of, so giving yet so firm. These mats are ideal for cutting labels and graphics or anytime you’re using sharp blades and you don’t want to damage the underlying surface. I found this company that offered a great product at a decent price.
Funny Story. When I first started in museums I was the only preparator there. I used an old piece of plywood to make my cutting surface. It was good at first, pine is a nice soft surface, it didn’t immediately dull the blade. But quickly I had a variety of troughs that made my blade wobble as I cut my labels. My cuts were no longer perfectly straight. Don’t suffer this fate, buy a self-healing cutting mat.
You’ll find that you’ll have a couple of folks working simultaneously, having a couple of mats around in a variety of sizes is also ideal.
We sometimes piece ours together to make large surfaces so we can spread out. And yet, we can split them up and work on separate jobs. Ebb and flow. Things change from day to day (as you already know).
