Hello Trade Community, Here’s part one of a two part series. We’ve been given a budget to solve this peripheral strip lighting inside our eight tall cases this fiscal year. It’s very exciting because we are going from these pill shaped lamps (pictured below, I’ll work on finding a part number on these) to LED strips. First, let’s discuss the issues. BURN OUT! that is ...[Read More]

Hello fellow preparator and technician nerds.  Here’s the final in the Tom Sachs series of films.  He makes some other fun films and I encourage you to check em out, but I think this is the last one that applies to this site’s mission.  If he makes another or if I missed one please let me know so I can get it up here.  The Benjamin Moore and Krylon product placement aside, there are ma...[Read More]

Tom Sachs Film for Preparator Nerds-10 Bullet Points, Knolling, and Other Great Ways to Run a Shop

We love this video and make it  a habit of having newbies watch it to get a sense of how one should conduct themselves in a studio or shop where many people have to coexist.  we depend on each other to keep the place clean, organized, and fully stocked.  Otherwise a space can quickly spin out of control which is not only dangerous, it’s a very unproductive place to get things done.  Would yo...[Read More]

The Dinosaurs Arrive and Unload at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

This is a fun little video and demonstrates how these creatures are wrapped and rigged.  Not as much about final placement, but there are a couple jacks and lifts I haven’t used before.  Enjoy. -MT-  [iframe id=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/mTWkQ4PXwDo?rel=0&autoplay=0&loop=0&wmode=opaque” mode=”normal”]

Live Dinosaurs Creep Through the Crowd. A Good Idea or Not?

Having a little one at home changes you in so many ways.  Our son is 18 months and the fear that crosses his face when he sees one of us go under water in the pool is terrible to see and is like nothing else, so for now we avoid doing it.  Of course as time goes on we’ll try again and show him how fun it is.  In this video you’ll see some very fearful faces amongst the smiling ones.  I...[Read More]

ZooLex is a Robust Resource for the Zoo Professional

It looks like the site was designed in the 90s, the site could use some major updating, but the content is there.  Particularly fun is the gallery of zoos.  They break each Zoo down to size, maps, animals, cost, designer, conditions, plants, ect.  It’s a nice overview look at how others organize themselves.  From the ZooLex site About page: The ZooLex Zoo Design Organization: The ZooLex Zoo ...[Read More]

Make your own Digital Picasso Head

I came across this today and the concept could be applied to other artists physically in the gallery.  Additionally if your institution owns a Picasso, then you could install an iPad with this site running.  Anyway, it’s a fun concept that can be extended in many ways. Picassohead, a digital tool that allows users to create their own masterpieces using famous features drawn by Picasso, is a ...[Read More]

The Indiana State Museum & Historic Sites Gets Happy

This is a typical scene.  A group of individuals who work really hard together, day in, day out.  Long hours, sometimes intense, and then we invite out community and the world to come see what we have and how we’re presented it.  After it’s all done, or sometimes while it’s being done, we make silly videos and take fun behind the scenes pictures that only you see.  Well, ISM&...[Read More]
