So is nerd-dom spelled with two Ds or one? Not sure, but I thought two read better. Anyway, we love Tom Sachs at our shop and thought we’d create a short series of video introductions for his video works. In this video it takes the inane task of sweep and breaks it down as any task worth doing should. Question, and there is not right or wrong answer here, do you enjoy tuning out when pos...[Read More]
Here’s a quick image set of us getting through dozens of frames that we had to refinish. The original frame finish was an unattractive crackled silver and gold. Unusable for the museums current character. I’ll go into the testing we went through o get to our final finish in another post, but here is the finale and the tools we used to get it done. Of course one of the paramount con...[Read More]
Here’s a quick behind the scenes look at assembling a faux cabaret for the exhibition. Much of it was built and painted off-site and what you see here are the steps to assemble. It’s amazing how the most minimal of materials can give such a grand impression. We wanted to space to be dark and intimate so you’ll notice that we cover the windows with a dark blue vinyl to match an ad...[Read More]
Iceland. By design, many of the hinderances that would keep one from making it all of the way to Iceland have been removed. Instead of relying on native travelers or those headed specifically into Iceland, Icelandair is a low cost carrier that sells the idea of Iceland as an attractive stopover destination for those traveling to Europe or North America.
Here are a couple of pictures I took at the museum to help those with young visitors understand the museum’s expectation and how they advertise the FREE for those under 25 program. I’ve also included a projector per image as well as a general shot of the building. It’s set above the ocean front, it’s a beautiful place to be. Here is their ABOUT stuff: With two locations, th...[Read More]
This is part of our Game On Series, a series of interactives throughout the museum spaces; this one is called Arts and Letters. The interactive consists of a colorful pouch, a few pencils, a few pads of paper, a 26-sided die, and timer, and of course a set of directions. The pouches hang from their zippers on the doors to the gallery using magnetic hooks, and the doors are left open during public ...[Read More]
We had to find a way to quickly wrap an old painting with its ornate frame for a 4 hour road trip. The frame extends beyond the main body of the frame and this was our challenge- how do we wrap the work so it puts the least amount of pressure on the frame? We didn’t want to ride the work flat as this old canvas would not appreciate bouncing up and down, and just putting foam along the bottom...[Read More]
As you can see from the pictures below, we were faced with a difficult installation. This piece is meant to float up a bit on one of its legs. This is and makes it very graceful, but what about defending against the “visitor touch?” So we decided to start with what we called a shoe or sole and see how stable it felt after. If it were to be stable, then we’d be done, if it needed more work, wel...[Read More]
I can’t find a manufacturer name on this box! Anyone have a source for boxes like this? In the pictures below, you’ll notice white straps were used to bind the wrapped work to the cardboard holder. I subsequently used some tape to demonstrate how it all fits together.
Nothing groundbreaking to see here, but sometimes simplicity can be revelatory. We wanted to make this rolling table by the artist Barbara Spring a little *less* rolling. Some monofilament and pan head screws and we were there. (Keen observers might catch sight of the visible screw heads- perfect candidates for a coat of wall color paint!)
What do all of you think? Originally we went with things painted all the same, through and through. I think it was both an aesthetic decision as well as pragmatic. We had $750,000 worth of case work done all at the same time for our 125,000 square foot expansion, and some things needed to be economized. A few years later we had a ped/case intensive exhibition of origami work and it struck me tha...[Read More]
This was a very promising product. Was. MMMOOOORORRREEE here… Put your comments below if you have tried this or want to second the vote for 3M to package this into something usable for all of us. I have ht ear of the rep, maybe we could get this done?
