A book that niches down hard and pulls out each detail. Books are a nice reference especially when you need to highlight or dogear a favorite section for later use in storage or in the gallery, or to share with your colleagues.

Like you these practitioners poured their blood and sweat into thier work so you and I could get that much better at our jobs. Sometimes it’s a section on how to work smarter not harder, other times it’s a nuanced technique, other times it’s what NOT to do; these practical books are here to help. I’ve compiled a really excellent list of books for museum pros like you and me. Here are the books we have or are going to order. I did a deep-dive in researching these books, I thought I’d help the MT community by compiling a description of each of them from the perspective of a museum pro. This list will grow over the years and is thus presented in no particular order. As these books come in and we get through them, I’lll make updates here as well.

Making the case: A great way to increase your knowledge and expertise is to ask your institution to make this purchase for you. Many places have a staff development fund that generally goes to conference trips, workshops, or webinars. But a book purchase fits neatly into this bucket as well. Often there will be a small pot of money at the end of the fiscal year that goes unused, sadly. You can help out by applying for those funds to buy one of these books. Good luck.

I actually just ordered The Preparator’s Handbook: A Practical Guide for Preparing and Installing Collection Objects by Andrew Saluti, and I have to say, it looks really practical. We all know that preparing and installing collection objects can be a real challenge, but this book provides a wealth of practical advice and tips to help make the process smoother and more effective.

The book starts by providing a comprehensive overview of the different types of collection objects, including paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts. Saluti then goes on to outline the various steps involved in preparing and installing these objects, from assessment and conservation to transportation and installation.

The chapters play out like this:

Introduction

The Preparator’s Workspace

Tools and Materials

Object Handling

Object Preparation

Object Mounting

Installation Design

Installation Preparation

Installation Techniques

Project Management

Conclusion

Appendix A: Metric Conversion Tables

Appendix B: Suppliers

Bibliography

Index

It’s a comprehensive guide to the practical skills and techniques needed to prepare and install collection objects in museums, galleries, and other exhibition spaces.

The book is aimed at handlers, preparators, technicians, and other professionals who work with collection objects, but it can also be useful for students and anyone interested in the technical aspects of museum work.

Some highlights of the book include:

The emphasis on hands-on, practical skills, with step-by-step instructions and detailed illustrations to help readers master techniques such as packing, handling, and installation.

The coverage of a wide range of materials and object types, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, and more, as well as electronic media and other digital objects.

The focus on safety and risk management, with advice on how to identify and manage potential hazards and minimize risk.

The emphasis on collaboration and teamwork, with guidance on how to work effectively with curators, designers, and other stakeholders.

The discussion of new technologies and techniques, such as 3D printing and augmented reality, and their implications for exhibition design and object preparation.

Overall, “The Preparator’s Handbook” looks to be a valuable resource for anyone involved in the preparation and installation of collection objects. It provides practical advice and guidance on a wide range of topics, and is sure to be a useful reference for anyone working in the museum field.

I suspect I’ll gleam a solid handful of worthwhile tips and tricks. I’m always looking to tune up my mount making skills and I think the newer crew could benefit from reading about the pre and handling details we’ve been teaching them in the gallery.
Another book we just ordered is Collection Conundrums: Solving Collections Management Mysteries by Rebecca A. Buck. This book is right up our alley, it provides practical solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face in collections management. We’re doing a major collections move later this year. I thought it best to tackle this book BEFORE we come across a collection conundrum so we have a plan of attack when or if we do. Let’s be real, it’s WHEN we come across a conundrum. With 140+ years of collecting here at the Crocker, there’s bound to be an anomaly in here somewhere.

The book is divided into chapters that address various conundrums, from storage and preservation to access and security. Buck provides a comprehensive overview of each issue and then offers practical solutions and best practices that can be applied in a museum setting. The real-world examples and case studies used throughout the book will help us better understand the concepts and how they could be applied in our own work.

Hey there! So I just finished reading “Managing Previously Unmanaged Collections: A Practical Guide for Museums” by Angela Kipp, and I have to say, it was a real lifesaver. As someone who works in a museum, I can attest to the fact that managing previously unmanaged collections can be a real challenge. But this book provides a wealth of practical advice and tips to help make the process smoother and more effective.

The book starts by providing a comprehensive overview of the different types of previously unmanaged collections, including private collections, archives, and historical societies. Kipp then goes on to outline the various steps involved in managing these collections, from assessment and cataloging to preservation and access.

Hey there! I recently read the book “Art Can Kill” by Bryan L Cooke and I must say, it was quite a ride. As someone who works in a museum, I found it particularly relevant to my line of work.

The book is a mystery thriller that revolves around a series of murders at a museum. The main character, Adam, who is a curator at the museum, finds himself caught in the middle of the investigation and is forced to use his expertise in art history to uncover the truth behind the murders.

The chapters break down like this:

Introduction: Moving Art

Art Can Kill

Education

Cart & Crate

A servant Must Never Forget His Place

Raids, Reparations, and Shady Dealings

Thefts

Sharks and Hustlers

What I appreciated most about this book is how it highlighted the often-overlooked dangers that come with working in the art world. From the handling of priceless artworks to the politics and egos that exist within museums, “Art Can Kill” gave me a new appreciation for the challenges we face on a daily basis.

Cooke does an excellent job of weaving together art history, mystery, and thriller elements to create a fast-paced and engaging story. It was a real page-turner for me, as I was constantly trying to solve the mystery along with the main character.

Overall, I would definitely recommend “Art Can Kill” to anyone who works in the art or museum world. It’s a fun and entertaining read that provides a unique perspective on the challenges we face and the sacrifices we make in the pursuit of preserving art and culture.

Hey there! So I just finished reading “Collection Care” by Brent Powell, and I have to say, it was a real game-changer. As someone who works in a museum, I know that taking care of collections can be a real challenge, but this book provides a wealth of practical advice and tips to help make the process smoother and more effective.

The book starts by providing a comprehensive overview of the different types of collection materials, including paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts. Powell then goes on to outline the various steps involved in caring for these materials, from assessment and conservation to storage and transportation.

Hey there! So I just finished reading “Closed on Mondays: Behind the Scenes at the Museum” by Dinah Casson, and I have to say, it was an absolute must-read for anyone who works in a museum. As someone who works in the field, I know that there’s a lot that goes into running a museum that the public never sees, and this book provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at what really happens when the doors are closed.

The book starts by introducing the reader to the different types of museums and the various departments that make them run, from curatorial to visitor services and everything in between. Casson then goes on to provide a detailed look at what goes into the day-to-day operations of a museum, from managing collections and exhibitions to dealing with visitors and managing the finances.

With this one the chapters are:

Introduction

The Museum World

The Building Blocks

The Staff

The Visitor

Designing Exhibitions

Designing Learning Spaces

Digital Technology

Planning and Managing Projects

Building Maintenance

Cleaning and Conservation

Access and Inclusion

Making Money

Measuring Success

Conclusion

Appendix A: Museums with Online Collections

Appendix B: Further Reading

Glossary

Index

One of the things I appreciated most about this book was the emphasis on the importance of teamwork in running a museum. Casson stresses the importance of working together as a team, from the curators to the security guards, to ensure that the museum runs smoothly and provides the best possible experience for visitors.

Another aspect of the book that I found particularly valuable was the focus on the challenges that museums face, from budget cuts and staffing issues to the pressures of keeping up with changing technology and visitor expectations. Casson provides practical advice and tips on how museums can overcome these challenges and continue to provide a high-quality visitor experience.

Some highlights of the book include:

An exploration of the day-to-day workings of a museum, including the planning and execution of exhibitions, the management of collections, and the development of educational programs.

Insights into the challenges and opportunities facing museums in the 21st century, including the need to engage with diverse audiences, embrace digital technologies, and balance the demands of preserving cultural heritage with the desire to innovate and experiment.

Case studies of museums around the world that have successfully addressed these challenges, including the Tate Modern in London, the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., and the Palace Museum in Beijing.

Interviews with museum professionals, including curators, educators, conservators, and administrators, who share their perspectives on the joys and frustrations of working in the museum world.

Overall, I would highly recommend “Closed on Mondays: Behind the Scenes at the Museum” to anyone who works in a museum or is interested in the inner workings of museums. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, this book provides an insightful and engaging look at what it takes to run a museum and is sure to be an enjoyable and enlightening read.

Be it through objects, stories, interactives, graphics, or little things they can take away with them so they can remember the experience. No need to reinvent the wheel, a photo booth, be it digital or actual, is always a crowd favorite.

It’s hard to know what hardware will be right for your situation. I did the research and tried to break down all the pros and cons of the top 4 models.
There once was a mini printer so bright,

With Bluetooth, it prints with such delight,

It’s small and compact,

And easy to act,

Now memories can be printed all night!

Mini Printers: Pros and Cons for Museums

There are several popular models of Bluetooth-enabled mini color printers including HP Sprocket, Canon Ivy Mini Photo Printer, Kodak Mini 3 Retro, and Fujifilm Instax Mini Link.

Pros of these printers include:

Portability: These printers are small in size and can easily fit in a pocket, making them ideal for on-the-go printing in any gallery space or off-site location.

Convenient printing: With Bluetooth connectivity, these printers allow for easy and convenient printing from a smartphone or tablet. Best to use the museum’s tablet so you don’t have to connect to each and every visitor’s phone.

High-quality prints: Many of these printers produce high-quality, vibrant color prints.

Cons of these printers include:

Limited paper capacity: The small size of these printers also means a limited paper capacity, making them less suitable for high-volume printing.

Cost of consumables: The cost of the printing paper and ink can be higher compared to traditional printers.

Limited functionality: These printers typically have limited functionality compared to full-featured printers, such as the lack of scanning and copying capabilities.

No branding options on the photo itself. That would be cool, but it’s not available at this price point. Consider a sticker you pop on before handing it over.

The HP Sprocket is a Bluetooth-enabled mini color printer that is designed for on-the-go printing. It is small in size, easy to carry around, and produces high-quality, vibrant color prints.

One of the standout features of the HP Sprocket is its user-friendly app, which offers plenty of customization options such as filters, frames, and text. The app is easy to navigate and makes printing a breeze.

Another advantage of the HP Sprocket is its affordability, with paper refills available at a reasonable cost. The 2×3 inch print size is perfect for creating mini prints to share with friends or decorate your space.

However, it is important to note that the print quality of the HP Sprocket may not be as sharp as some of the other mini color printers on the market. Additionally, the small size of the printer also means a limited paper capacity, making it less suitable for high-volume printing.

In conclusion, the HP Sprocket is a great option for those who value portability, affordability, and a user-friendly app. It produces high-quality, vibrant color prints and is perfect for on-the-go printing. Just be aware of its limitations regarding print quality and paper capacity.

The Canon Ivy app is user-friendly and offers a variety of filters and frames to add to your prints. However, it doesn’t offer as many customization options as some other apps in the market.

Fujifilm Instax Mini Link Printer Review:

The Fujifilm Instax Mini Link is a compact and portable mini color printer that produces high-quality, vibrant color prints. Its user-friendly app offers a variety of filters and frames, making it fun and easy to add customization to your prints.

One of the standout features of the Fujifilm Instax Mini Link is its print quality, especially with portraits and close-ups. The prints come out clear and sharp, making them perfect for creating keepsake photos.

However, it’s important to note that paper refills for the Fujifilm Instax Mini Link are on the pricier side compared to some other mini printers. Additionally, the printer only produces 2.1×2.1 inch prints, which is a smaller size than some other options.

Another potential issue with the Fujifilm Instax Mini Link is that it doesn’t come with a rechargeable battery, so you have to purchase one separately. This might not be ideal for those who prioritize convenience.

In conclusion, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Link is a great option for those who value portability, a user-friendly app, and high-quality prints. Its compact size and fun customization options make it perfect for creating keepsake photos. Just be aware of its higher cost of consumables, limited print size, and the need to purchase a separate rechargeable battery.

High-quality prints with bright and vivid colors

Comes with a rechargeable battery, making it convenient for on-the-go printing

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Link Printer is a great option for those who value high-quality prints and fun features. Its rechargeable battery and user-friendly app make it a popular choice among those who love to create and share keepsake photos. However, if you’re looking for an affordable option or a larger print size, you might want to consider other options.

Ultimately you have to make a choice in your given situation. Budget and style play a part. In my experience, most consumer-level printers are fine for occasional use such are months-long temporary exhibits or special events like openings or for school groups. But if you’re looking for a workhorse that cranks this stuff out every day, 10 hours a day, these printers may not be for you. There’s a whole world of industrial printers out there with brands that may be unfamiliar to the average consumer.

That said, before going all in on a workhorse with a set of big beefy hardware and big beefy prices, try one of these printers as your first iteration. Work out the kinks and get feedback from your visitors. You’ll then be ready to present a line item on the next budget with real numbers to back up your projected costs. Again, please feel free to share your journey here on MuseumTrade. You are so appreciated.

Hi Museum Folk,

I came across this and it blew my mind. I mean, in retrospect of course they are using augmented reality in building, but I hadn’t seen it yet. What makes this even more tangental to all of us is that Matt Construction is using it to build museums. Matt is a big supporter of museums, they’ve supported the Western Museums Association’s conference (WMA) for many years (back when we went to conferences, remember those days?).

What I’d like to see is more of this being used inside already constructed museums. Imagine if you could raise your hand and point to a skeleton and it would glad the T. rex in scales with color (all guesswork I realize), or point to the Starry Night and have an image of the original town scene laid over the painting (don’t hate me if the starry night was not painted from a real town, I’m just riffing here and don’t want to stop to do research). The list goes on an on.

I’m imaging you need a very strong wifi connection (which we don’t have), a grant to buy a bunch of these $400+ augmented reality goggles. A check out system to keep track of the goggles’ return. A whole educational component to train visitors on their use, a way of cleaning them post use. OH and let’s not forget all the original art, design, and educational content on the back end. My guess is that a year would be the right amount of time to devote to a handful of people. Maybe not all full-time on it, but there would be so a ton of deliverables that would need buy in.

The downside of course is people paying more attention to the goggles and not those in front of them. Have you seen this in use in a museum, how about your museum or gallery? Museum preparators, museum designers, art handlers, etc please help all of us by sharing what this looks like and its pros and cons and where you think all of this is going or is it just a fad. Also, how about the hardware, what are you using, what works, what had you wished you bought instead?

Keep up the great work everyone and enjoy the videos.

Matt

(no relation to the builder)

Goggles in use, omg cool (no audio btw)

Now that you’ve seen what it’s like to be behind the goggles, here’s the project requiring this kind of work:

Here’s the transcript if you can’t use volume right now:

At Matt Construction. We want to be the pioneers and moving technology forward. Overall, we are trying to achieve one thing, which is to build better buildings with great quality.

The type of project that Matt does tend to be more complicated. This project is difficult because every surface on it is round or spherical, and so conventional two dimensional drawings don’t work very well.

Every layer is curved in a different way. So looking at it 2D model will never give you the real way. This thing is going to look at the end. 3d models help us invasion what it is.

The use of augmented reality on this project is for location of the anchors for the ceiling panels inside the gap and theater.

What AR does is it doesn’t obstruct your vision. You’re seeing what you’re seeing, and it’s augmenting your vision with the virtual world. Everything’s on even up here. So this gives us the ability to see what we’re framing.

They are viewing the model through their goggles. So they literally see where the anchors are supposed to be, and they know whether they’ve got the anchor in the right spot in this particular theater. It’s a very, very important part of the layout to get right.

The Usability of AR has immense potential. We just have scratched the surface of it. And this is where Matt has a niche to help plants with those very unique situation. Unique buildings, unique architecture clients, architects. They love us for what we do and for being able to be a partner and not just say no, that’s not buildable. We want to build it for them. If they have come up with the design for it, people will be using this building for years. They will probably not remember who built it or who designed it, but they will enjoy it.

They will cherish the moment every time they step into this theater.

We came across this article on the SEGD.org website about this neat exhibition. I thought all of you might be able to gleam some inspiration from it. Enjoy.

-MT-

When the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago conceived its latest permanent exhibit, the design brief was concise and non-negotiable: Create an artful and immersive way for visitors to explore the beauty of mathematical patterns found in nature.

And make it cool.

The museum and its exhibition planning and design team at Luci Creative wanted to approach this complex topic “softly” by creating a sense of wonder and excitement through fun and experiential activities, including interactives. “What we didn’t want was to hit museum guests over the head with complex equations and mathematical principles,” says Kevin Snow, creative director at Luci Creative. Adds AJ Goehle, director of strategy and design, “We wanted to create an exciting environment for guests to learn about math—without them being aware they’re learning about math!”

The overall design aesthetic for the 7,500-sq.-ft. exhibit uses the Golden Ratio or Fibonacci sequencing in nearly all dimensionalities, as well as the essence of nature itself as a guiding visual statement.

“We wanted to illustrate the patterns in nature, teach guests how to see patterns that make up the natural and man-made environments and recognize that patterns are simply an expression of math. We wanted them to leave saying, ‘Math isn’t as scary as I thought it was, and it is everywhere!’” adds Snow.

The museum staff knew that media and digital technology would be important tools for engaging visitors, so they added Leviathan, a Chicago-based conceptual design studio, to the team to create an immersive introductory film and 12 interactives.

“Our job was to figure out a new approach to visualizing these patterns that occur in the natural world—and show how they also occur in human bodies,” says Jason White, executive creative for Leviathan. Working in close collaboration with the MSI curatorial staff, the Leviathan team immersed themselves in spirals, da Vinci’s Golden Ratio, Voronoi patterns and fractal branching—all examples of how nature divides itself into finite, predictable patterns.

MSI staff had a technology “ask list” already developed, and it included the latest technologies like Kinect cameras and Leap motion sensors. At the very top of the list was an ultra-widescreen film experience that would reel visitors in as they entered the exhibit and prepare them for learning about these “Numbers in Nature.”

The result is a curving, 25-ft.-long by 7-ft.-high immersive screen that delivers a compelling story in heart-stopping 4838×1400 resolution. Serving as the backbone of the exhibit, it introduces visitors to all of the mathematical patterns and creates a unique visual language that flows throughout the exhibit.

“Ultimately, we invented a new visual language based on MSI’s designs that is educational and fits all the patterns at the exhibit’s heart,” says White. “We helped design this system using white spiral, voronoi and fractal branching patterns that are superimposed over colorful footage of nature, the human body and architecture.” The film experience combines high-definition cinematography with motion graphics and visual effects, as well as an original score by Joel Corelitz of Waveplant.

Luci Creative divided the exhibit into three major zones, including two galleries that introduce visitors to the math concepts and a mind-bending, 1,800-sq.-ft. mirror maze where visitors can actually step inside a three-dimensional pattern. The maze is a sea of equilateral triangular chambers that repeat in a dizzying array of mirrors (called a tessellation pattern).

“It was MSI’s idea to include the maze. We worked with them to develop the look and feel to reflect a forest of natural patterns, tree branches and a bit of fantasy,” says Goehle. An additional layer of experiential learning in the maze allows visitors to find hidden motion-triggered “Easter eggs” of additional math content, and a hidden room featuring displays of various physical math/geometry models made by artists from across the U.S.

In the interactives gallery, 12 stations invite deeper dives into the content. Visitors can virtually explore 3D spirals, Voronoi diagrams and other essential natural patterns by waving their hands or touching interactive screens. Combining analog controls such as knobs, wheels and blocks with touchscreens, Kinect cameras and Leap Motion sensors, Leviathan’s team created experiences that would appeal to both children and adults.

One of the most complex interactives is called the Vitruvian Man. It is a digitally enhanced two-way mirror that lets visitors see if their proportions comply with da Vinci’s Golden Ratio. “When you look in the mirror, 3D cameras track your skeletal system in real time and measure your proportions, then you can compare that with the Golden Ratio,” says White. “People line up for this and they walk away with a real understanding of how these mathematical patterns work in their own bodies.”

The project posed some daunting technical challenges, says Leviathan creative director Bradon Webb. Rendering times for the HD film, for example, were “mind-boggling.” And calibrating content to interaction times and visitor throughput was a major factor in designing the interactive stations.

Webb described the complexity of the interactives. “The Leap Motion installation features nine unique 3D objects that participants can rotate by moving their hands in space, while the Vitruvian Man activity uses a Pepper’s Ghost effect to display graphic information and proportions over a mirror reflection of your body’s image. We used a Kinect camera to track bodies and then dynamically draw lines with our real-time engine.”

Working with the MSI staff was an amazing and atypical experience for a team that is more frequently collaborating with major brands on product launches or entertainment acts on performances.

“First, to work on a permanent exhibit for the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere was very cool,” says White. “But the best part was working so closely with a team of these extraordinarily smart individuals—PhDs who were always on hand to consult with us on the script or the fine details, or giving us pointers on how things should and shouldn’t be explained. When we got too design tech-y, they were there to root us in the mathematics.”
